LEARN TO SAIL ON EAGLE LAKE

The Eagle Lake Sailing Club (ELSC) is excited to teach sailing and water safety to area youth! The program offers youth sailing lessons for beginners to intermediate sailors during a one-week Junior Sailing Camp or a multi-week Junior Sailing Class that culminates in a Junior Regatta over Labor Day weekend. Register early as space is limited!

Our lead instructors are US Sailing certified and trained in first aid/CPR/AED. The curriculum is based on the US Sailing Learn Sailing Right! Beginning and Intermediate Sailing programs. The instructor-to-student ratio for the beginner session will be ~4:1 and ~6:1 for the advanced beginner/intermediate session. Instruction will include chalk talks, on-land demonstrations, on-water sailing drills, games, and practice.

The camp and classes are open to children ages 8 (by the first day of class) and up.

boat tipped over

Sailors should be comfortable lake swimmers. A capsize and recovery drill will be taught in both camp and classes. A swim check will be conducted at the first day of the camp and the first Wednesday night class. Sailors must demonstrate the ability to swim 50 yards wearing their life jacket.

Boats

All camps and classes will be taught using Optimist Prams (Optis) or Laser Radials (Lasers). If you don’t have an Opti or Laser for your child, ELSC has purchased a limited number of sailboats that can be rented. Sailors will be placed in an Opti or Laser at the instructor’s discretion based on sailor size and demonstrated skill level.

Boat Rental

All camp and class participants, regardless of membership, wishing to use an ELSC sailboat must pay a $100 boat rental fee per boat per camp/class. This fee reserves the boat for the participant to use during the camp/class for which they are registered.

Children and grandchildren of associate and full members my use the boats outside of camp/class time under the supervision of the associate/full member, provided they are not being used for another camp/class, on a first come/first served basis.

Children of introductory members may use the boats outside of camp/class time, provided they are not being used for another camp/class, on a first come/first served basis by prior arrangement with a Sailing School committee member or other ELSC associate/full member (the committee member or ELSC member shall be responsible for ensuring the boat is properly stored, waiting until the introductory member leaves, and ensuring the club is closed and locked if they are the last members at ELSC).

For the Junior Sailing Class only, a family with more than one child in the class may choose to double up (subject to recommended weight limits) or take turns sharing a single boat.
